Beach Restoration

This Dune Restoration Project was spawned by the concern of the Florida Department of Transportation. The DOT approached the SJRWMD asking what could be done to restore the stability of the shoreline dunes along A1A, a Florida Scenic Highway, and help prevent further erosion.

The SJRWMD conceived a plan that involved partnerships with the DOT, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and several local growers and volunteers.

The project involved the erection of sand fences (provided by the DOT) and planting of some 6,000 - 7,000 plants including cord grass, beach grass and sea oats in the effected area to help stabilize the soil.
